Parks & Recreation | Historical | Community Relations | Public Safety | Finance | Zoning Board | Board of Adjustment | Comprehensive Plan The Town of Summerfield prides itself on having active citizen participation through numerous advisory committees that support the policies and vision of the Town. In addition to serving on a committee, there are also short-term projects such as helping at special events like Founders’ Day or events in the park. There are also opportunities for Boy and Girl Scout service projects at our town parks. If you are interested in becoming involved please fill-out an application or contact the Committee Chair or Town Hall for more information. Summerfield Parks and Recreation Committee The Mission of the Summerfield Parks and Recreation Committee is to provide representation for the citizens of Summerfield by supporting Town Council’s efforts to enlighten and enrich the lives of citizens and to work toward the preservation of the environment by providing quality parks, facilities, and services designed for people of all ages and abilities. The Committee is overseeing the completion of phase II of the Summerfield Community Park and is developing plans for special events such as “Art in the Park”, “Music in the Park”, Ice Cream Socials, etc. Scout Projects: If you are a Boy or Girl Scout troop or a scout looking for a service project, we may have projects awaiting your help! The Committee meets at 7:00 pm the first Thursday of the month at the Summerfield Community Center, 5404 Centerfield Road. History Committee The Mission of the History Committee is to seek, identify, locate, list and record, with photographs and written descriptions, historical structures in Summerfield. We want to share our information with other interested organizations and provide educational resources to our citizens. The Committee has led the effort to designate a National Register Historic District along portions of Oak Ridge and Summerfield Roads, develop building plaques and pole banners celebrating our historic structures, and provide educational resources for the community by overseeing the Town Hall Museum of local history. The Committee meets at 7:00 pm the last Thursday of the month at Summerfield Town Hall, 4117 Oak Ridge Road. Community Relations Committee The Community Relations Committee oversees the development and presentation of our annual Founders’ Day Parade and Celebration. Founders’ Day celebrates both the founding of the community of Summerfield in the 1761, and the incorporation of Summerfield as a municipality in 1996. Held every May, the celebration includes one of the longest street parades in Guilford County, music, food, games, and carnival rides. The Committee meets at 7:00 pm the first Tuesday of the month at Summerfield Town Hall, 4117 Oak Ridge Road. Public Safety Committee The purpose of the Public Safety Committee is to review and investigate citizen concerns regarding safety issues and make recommendations to the Town Council. In addition, the committee oversees local Senior Resources activities. The committee is responsible for ensuring the emergency preparedness of the Town by maintaining the town generator, properly maintaining emergency supplies and equipment, and providing training and staff for the two designated Red Cross emergency shelters (located at Summerfield Methodist Church and Center Grove United Methodist Church). Senior Resources is a sub-committee of the Public Safety Committee. Programs include monthly lunches and activities at two local churches. The first is at Center United Methodist Church, 6142 Lake Brandt Road (map) on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 11:00 a.m. till 1:30 p.m. The second is at Summerfield United Methodist Church, 2334 Scalesville Road (map) on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 9:30 a.m. till noon. You do not have to be a church member to attend the Senior Resources programs. Finance Committee The mission of the Finance Committee is to function as stewards of the assets of the Town of Summerfield. In order to accomplish this mission, the Committee will perform the following:
1) Function as a liaison between committees and the Town Council in the provision of financial support services, 2) Provide a collaborative effort in the accomplishment of Town goals, 3) Lend areas of expertise, provide advice, and make recommendations as appropriate to other committees, staff, and Town Council, 4) Support in the creation of the Town budget, 5) Provide unbiased review and recommendations for the expenditure of Town funds as requested by committees and community-based non-profits, and 6) Maintain fiscal responsibility in all actions. Zoning Board The Zoning Board is responsible for reviewing all zoning map amendments (rezonings), major subdivision and site plan review, and all watershed modifications. The Board acts in an advisory capacity for zoning map amendments and watershed modifications, passing on their recommendations to the Town Council for final approval. The Zoning Board meets at 7:00 pm the fourth Monday of each month at the Summerfield Community Center, 5404 Centerfield Road. Board of Adjustment The Board of Adjustment reviews all requests for variances, Special Use Permits, and appeals of the enforcement officer regarding development ordinance interpretations. The Board acts in a Quasi-Judicial manner in that the board sits in judgment when reviewing cases and must determine specific facts in relation to the case. The Board of Adjustment meets at 6:30 pm on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Summerfield Community Center, 5404 Centerfield Road. Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee is responsible for overseeing the development of a new long-range plan for the Town of Summerfield. The plan includes reviewing transportation, residential and commercial development, natural resources protection, greenways and parks development, and any other issue facing Summerfield over the next 10-15 years. Due to the nature of the work being undertaken, the committee does not have a set meeting date. Please refer to our on-line calendar for future meeting dates.
