The Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (GUAMPO) has released the Draft 2009-2015 Transportation Improvement Program.
According to the MPO website “the Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Program (MTIP) is a detailed list of transportation projects that have federal and state funding. The list covers the next seven years and is a required planning document under federal law. Consistent with the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), the MTIP shows the funding schedule for highway, public transportation, rail, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities in the area.”
Copies of the plan are available at Summerfield Town Hall, and at other area governmental offices including Oak Ridge, Stokesdale, and public library locations. In can also be located online at www.guampo.org .
Of particular interest to Summerfield residents is the construction schedule for the US 220 widening and the construction of the US 220/NC 68 Connector (Interstate I-73). The US 220 project (known as R-2309AB) is projected to begin right-of-way acquisition in late 2008, with construction to begin in 2010, taking approximately two years to complete. The widening will run from Horse Pen Creek Road north to the Haw River- intersecting with the US 220/NC 68 connector. The projected cost of the project is $54,594,000.
The US 220/NC 68 connector (R-2413) is broken into three segments, A-C. Segments A and B provide for new alignment from Edgefield Road north to US 220 and the Haw River. Right-ofway acquisition is proposed for 2010-11 with construction to begin in 2013. Segment C provides the connection from the Haw River north into Rockingham County to the intersection of US 220 and NC 68. Right-of-way for segment C has already been acquired; construction is expected to begin in 2010. The projected cost of the entire project is $190,788,000.
The construction of these two projects will have both short-term and long-term effects on Summerfield. In the short-term traffic patterns will be disrupted- especially along the US 220 project. Increased noise, traffic, and attendant problems may impact Summerfield beyond our control to mitigate. Just as importantly, the new and upgraded facilities may divide and isolate parts of our community much like a river. It is because of these issues that members of the Summerfield Comprehensive Plan Committee have indentified these projects as having a long term effect that must be planned for during the development of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan.
The Draft MTIP is open to public comment until August 15, 2008. Comments should be addressed to the Greensboro MPO via mail at Greensboro Department of Transportation, PO Box 3136, Greensboro NC 27402-3136, online at www.guampo.org, or by phone at (336) 373-4368.
